My Top 5 Downtown Wilmington Desserts 🍦

Hello, fellow dessert lovers! 🍩 🍰 πŸͺ πŸ₯§

As the General Manager of The Cove, and a self-proclaimed aficionado (maybe more like addict) of all things sweet, I’m thrilled to share my top five favorite dessert spots in Downtown Wilmington.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, these places are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Let’s dive in!

1. Boombalatti’s Homemade Ice Cream

πŸ“ 1005 N 4th St, Wilmington, NC 28401

Boombalatti’s is a true gem in Wilmington’s dessert scene. Their local homemade ice cream is nothing short of spectacular, with a rotating selection of flavors that keep you coming back for more. From classic vanilla and chocolate to adventurous concoctions like lavender honey and cannoli, each of their flavors is unique and delicious.

I particularly love Boombalatti's because not only are they local and family owned (and awesome partners and friends of ours!) but they also have a hilarious social media presence. What truly sets them apart though, is their commitment to using only the finest, all-natural ingredients in their ice cream. Plus, they cater to everyone with options for vegan and gluten-free ice cream lovers, offering an impressive variety of flavors. My personal favorites? Fluffer Nutter Butter, Double Cookies & Cream, and Cinnamon Caramel Oatmeal Cookie, but my gluten-free husband says their salted caramel ice cream is the best he's ever had! (And he's tried a LOT of them!)

2. Little Dipper Fondue

πŸ“ 138 S Front St, Wilmington, NC 28401

Little Dipper Fondue Restaurant in downtown Wilmington is a cozy, interactive dining experience perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic date. Specializing in fondue, the restaurant offers a variety of savory cheese and rich chocolate dips, along with an assortment of fresh meats, veggies, and fruits for dipping. Their menu allows you to customize your experience, whether you’re craving a traditional Swiss fondue or something more adventurous like a spicy queso. Little Dipper’s relaxed, fun atmosphere makes it a local favorite for unique and memorable dining. Pro Tip: If the weather is nice, ask about their rooftop seating option!

3. Wake N Bake Donuts

πŸ“ 114 Princess St, Wilmington, NC 28401

Wake N Bake Donuts, a Wilmington favorite, is the go-to spot for donut lovers seeking bold and inventive flavors. Known for their fun, over-the-top creations, this shop offers everything from classic glazed to outrageous combinations like maple bacon and Fruity Pebbles. Their playful approach to donuts, using high-quality ingredients, keeps locals and visitors alike coming back for more. Whether you’re grabbing a dozen for a special occasion or indulging in a single treat, Wake N Bake is the place for donut lovers looking to start their day on a sweet note. Pro Tip: Don’t miss the “Carolina Sands” donut—its mix of maple and cinnamon gives it a French toast flavor is my personal favorite!

4. Pie Slayer

πŸ“ 129 Princess St, Wilmington, NC 28401

Pie Slayer, located in the heart of downtown Wilmington, is a pie lover’s dream, specializing in handcrafted, seasonal pies made from scratch. Known for their creative twists on classic recipes, this cozy spot offers everything from indulgent fruit pies to savory hand pies, all made with locally sourced ingredients. Their rotating menu ensures there’s always something new to try, with fan favorites like bourbon pecan and caramel apple making regular appearances. Whether you’re in the mood for a slice to go or an entire pie to share, Pie Slayer is the perfect stop for anyone craving a taste of homemade goodness. Pro Tip: Grab a savory hand pie for lunch—it’s the ultimate comfort food on the go!

5. Wandering Cone Ice Cream

πŸ“ 921 Princess St Unit 105, Wilmington, NC 28401

Wandering Cone Creamery, nestled in the Soda Pop District of downtown Wilmington, is a small-batch ice cream shop offering locally made delights. Owner and founder Amanda first became known among family and friends for her homemade mint stracciatella, which was so beloved it inspired her to open her own shop. The creamery keeps a selection of traditional local flavors year-round while featuring six “visiting” flavors that rotate monthly—check their Instagram for the latest lineup. Whether you’re craving a classic chocolate or strawberry, or feeling adventurous with unique options like sweet corn or chocolate banana pie, Wandering Cone has something for every ice cream lover. Pro Tip: Try the “flight” of six scoops served in a half egg carton—perfect for sampling without the flavors melting together!

To wrap it up...

Downtown Wilmington’s dessert scene is full of fun, creative treats and comforting favorites. Whether you’re trying out the cool flavors at Wandering Cone, diving into some pies at Pie Slayer, grabbing a Carolina Sands donut from Wake N Bake, or dipping into something sweet at Little Dipper Fondue, there’s something for everyone. These spots have definitely become my go-tos, not just for the desserts but for the good vibes they bring to downtown. If you haven’t checked them out yet, you’re in for a treat!
